********** one house plan
Alright Kyle, here's my offer. You want a house, right? Well, what do you know, I happen to design custom homes. I work in an architecture office here in Phoenix, and am willing to put together a set of architectural plans (sans stamp, being that I'm not registered yet) and work with you to create the home of your dreams. All for a year in phoenix. What do you say? - Lina
Sounds like a plan! Not sure about how the "stamp-factor" alters the viability of this plan, but let's see what the people say... -- Do you want "one house plan?" If you do, send in your offer for One House Plan to oneredpaperclip@gmail.com
********** one 30-second TV commercial
Yo Kyle I work at a video post house in St Louis Mo. I will trade the latest item for a full blown 30 sec television commercial. Aprox value $8000 David sextro - www.newworldpost.com
Wow! This is very cool. A full-on commercial. You never know - this could be the next "WAAAAAAZUP!" -- Do you want a 30 second TV commerical? If you do, send in your offer for one 30-second TV commercial to oneredpaperclip@gmail.com ********** Rachel's 24 hour lap-a-thon
Hello, this is Rachel. I currently work for a gentlemen's club in Roppingi, Tokyo, Japan where I earn my living by stripping. We make money out of bottles of champagne that we open or private dances we perform for our customers. Private dance consists of topless dance in privacy with the restriction of strictly no physical touch allowed from clients' side. Or you will be kicked out of the club and banned for good. This private dance costs 7,000yen (apx. $60) for 5min session and it is renewable. So I came up with the idea of how much it would cost for me to perform a 24hr consecutive private dance session. Quite simply, an hour can hold 12 sessions multiplied by 24 makes it 288 sessions times 60 is $17,280. I don't know how much an year rent in Phoenix is worth but I thought someone might be interested in trading for it. What do you think? Have a great day and hope to hear from you soon!! Best regards, Rachel. Hey Rachel, I can honestly say that I've never partook in a lap dance before, and my girlfiend would probably frown on the idea. But you know what? I'm sure there's somebody out there who'd be willing to make an offer for a 24 hour lap-a-thon from you. -- Do you want a 24 hour lap dance from Rachel? If you do, send in your offer for Rachel's 24 hour lap-a-thon to oneredpaperclip@gmail.com

Jays Hot Ride looks like a hack job (broken window, PRIMER with cheeze body work, cheap lowering job). The stripper only wishes she's worth $17,000 for 24 hours. Pretty Woman didn't even get that much for 2 day's worth of work. The tv time doesn't seem like a good deal either, because it doesn't actually cover advertising time on television, it's just a 30 second video clip for you on a dvd. It has nothing to do with the costs of putting that commercial on-air. The next successful offer needs to be BIGGER than the previous upgrades, like a big sailboat, or a time-share in florida. Keep the offers coming!

Twenty-four hours of notouching sexy dancing? That's seems like a pretty good way to drive a person crazy.

Has anyone ever read Alvin's Swap Shop, by Clifford B. Hicks, (Illustrated by Bill Sokol)? The story is very similar to "one red paperclip" though his turns into an adventure in the end. Alvin starts with an ant in a tube that he trades for something, that he then trades for something else, etc.

Very entertaining for kids, and still one of my favorites from when I was a kid.

I hope your girlfriend is not insecure - the whole trading up/bigger better deal mindset could be rough on a relationship!

    ReplyDelete
  6. Anonymous3:52 PM

I think the stripper ought to post pics f herself, or better yet, video of her getting her grove on - so we can make an informed decision on her worth.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Anonymous4:39 PM

The irony is that a no-touching, topless only lapdancer is offering a CANADIAN a dance. Canadian lapdances make other countries' lap dances look like Sunday school.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Anonymous6:41 PM

I for one as a canadian am going to have to agree with that lapdance comment

    ReplyDelete
  9. Anonymous9:19 PM

Wouldn't a stripper with a "grove" on be hard to see?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Anonymous10:50 PM

I live in Tokyo as well. As I have never been to her particular place, I have had several lap dances and other "recreational activities" in this city.

I can safely say that it would not be like a lap dance in Canada. Let you imagination run wild (but not TOO wild).

I think these three offers need to join forces, and make a 30-second commercial advertising a 24-hour lapdance in the back of a pimped Blazer!

The four months with the Porsche sounds fun.. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  13. So far i'd have to say four months in hollywood is your best offer by far but nothing here is as good as the year rent free in pheonix. Keep holding out for something bigger and better.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Anonymous3:15 AM

You gotta be joking me - out of all these offers a summer in Hollywood is easily the best. LA women are hot hot hot.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Anonymous5:33 AM

The Hollywood deal is the best. To rent a sports car like that for 4 months easily exceeds the rent in Phoenix http://www.exoticcarrentalsphoenix.com/porscheboxstersroadster.html

Secondly the rent in Hollywood is well , lets just say not cheap regardless where.

So monoterily this deal is worth some serious coin.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Anonymous6:04 AM

There doesn't seem to be a winner yet. Even though the LA place seems 3x as cool as the house in Phx you're only getting it for 1/3 of the time. Hold off until you get something bigger AND better.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Anonymous2:14 PM

the la deal is by far worth more than the year in az...its hell in az and heaven in la.... take the la 4 months + sports car

    ReplyDelete
  18. Yeah, but have any of you actually ever BEEN to Phoenix? I wouldn't live there for a year if somebody paid me. Trade up to Hollywood.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Anonymous5:12 PM

Let's not get carried away here. The Hollywood offer is for 3 months, not 4.

Rachel's offer is creative but doesn't seem well thought out. Is she even capable of dancing for 24 hours non-stop? Is anyone? And as others have pointed out, the excitement of a lap dance has a pretty short half-life.

Maybe she could revise the offer to be something like 24 hours' companionship with lap-dancing on demand in any appropriately safe/private environment, with clear rules for conduct spelled out as part of the offer? But really, short of an armed escort, the whole notion raises such safety issues for Rachel that I don't think it's viable in any event. Poor girl must really want to move to Phoenix...

Do we even need to comment on Jay's offer? What he has to lose is his credibility.

hey man dont even fall for that used up low rider job and hooker mean strippers are cheap and not worth losing the girl over hold out for the house you were wanting to get in the first place.

Been to Phoenix...Hollywood + Porche is your better bet with house plans as number 2. All others are below par. Great imagination and gumption on your part. Good luck.

what about a boat? hmmmmm if someone has a boat, and i mean a really nice boat, that could be a perspective trade...

I would choose either the house plan or summer in CA. Be sure to check out the logistics of not having a stamp. The commercial is interesting, and the ride....sorry dude, I have seen better.

Who would trade for a stripper sight unseen??? Not me!!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Anonymous1:54 AM

I say go with the hollywood house. Why? Because Both houses have a limited rent time meaning your gunna have to pack up and leave eventually. Meaning youll have to find another job etc But 3 months you could take a 3 month holiday! ANd what a holiday!

  31. Anonymous5:36 AM

Interesting story there Mr. MacDonald. A friend just sent me a link to a newspaper. I hope that you get what you are looking for. It seemed rather a joke when you started off w/ a red paperclip. I am surpirsed you have come as far as you did!

    Have fun trading!

I got a buddy that wants to take a shot in Hollywood to be a talent actor (I think he's seen one too many episodes of Entourage) but he seems pretty intent on moving out there ASAP - he's currently living in a 1BR in one of Trump's buildings in Manhattan - it is a mint, I am going to see if he is interested in a summer trade.

  33. Anonymous7:49 AM

Most house plans are available at no cost from a reputable builder if your building a house with them. No need to trade a year of living for the house plan.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Anonymous9:34 AM

You should trade this one year in phoenix for multiple things so that you could get more offers that can build on each other, thus making it easier for you to trade to your goal of a house.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Anonymous9:35 AM

I agree that the Summer in Hollywood sounds good. But will you have enough time to trade again before april 22? Something to think about at least. Perhaps a multiple level trade system is required. Could you recieve offers for the summer in hollywood and base your decision on those offers. I dont mean extend the scope of your trade scheme to an awkward size but it is something worth considering.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Anonymous11:15 AM

So far, the best offer is the current one you hold in your hand! You can download a house plan from the web for free. The 91 Blazer looks like it's worth just as much as that red paper clip, and that private dancer...how low is she willing to go? You should let the lap dancer live at the house in AZ for the free year, in return, you open the AZ house as a business for private lap sessions, and you make 100% profit. You get paid, and she has a roof over her head. Oh and you can pimp around in that 91 blazer by trading that owner with a year of free lap dances!

    Hi guys...

I´m from Brazil... Really dont know how much cost a year rent, but think the only thing worse is the summer at Hollywood....

But the time is tiking, and you can lose the trade because of time...

  38. Anonymous11:55 AM

I would honestly take the Hollywood Apartment, since it give me 3 months headstart to drive this car to mexico, or even the south most tip of chile. Heck, with 3 months, I can move these lovely sofa, Plasma TV, the Porche to some place the owner would never found.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Anonymous11:55 AM

Go to Hollywood - opportunites may come up and next thing you know you're in the movies and can afford your own home.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Anonymous12:15 PM

Hold out man. Between 3 and 4 months (not clear from the post) in Hollywood IS better than a year (or years) in Phoenix, hands down. However, keep thinking bigger. I see a cruise in your future for some reason...I must have been hypnotized by George and his many body piercings.

Without a doubt, my advice would be to take the Summer in California. Hope that you end up with your own house! :)

    ReplyDelete
  42. Anonymous1:00 PM

The summer in Hollywood sounds great, but note that it offers "one bedroom in a stunning apartment" -- not the whole apartment. Sounds like a roommate situation, which could be good or bad depending on the other roommates but is obviously worth much less than an entire apartment. Also, two of the three months offered are actually spring, not summer months. I know I'm being picky but I'm a lawyer. I'll be watching the site and if I see anything that I really want, I'd be prepared to offer representation in one criminal or civil case in California. Love the site!

Not sure what planet Dustin lives on, but on this planet, there is NO architect that offers free custom-designed house plans. In fact, there is no architect that would offer standard, cookie-cutter house plans for free either; they can actually charge over and over again for the exact same design. Most likely a 'reputable builder' would have a set of plans before he begins building a house, but those plans are certainly not 'no cost'; they are very much a part of the total price. Or, it depends how you look at it; maybe they would give you a roof for free, but the walls to hold it up will cost you 500,000!! A custom-designed house by a professional architect would be a pretty valuable item.

I'd definately say a no on the stripper and the car, and probly the commercial. LA seems good, especially the car. The house plans, well I just don't know on them.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Anonymous4:09 PM

I suggest the summer in Hollywood. Porches are awesome

    ReplyDelete
  48. Anonymous4:12 PM

I think the Hollywood offer is the best offer you've got, with the house as second, but far behind. However, if you actually get the house built as part of the trade, it pulls WAY out in front.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Anonymous4:22 PM

Hey, I wish I'd have heard about this earlier, I would have traded if you were still under the $1000 mark, but too late now; I don't have anything worth that much! Anyway, the stay in LA is deffinately the best so far. But is it three months or four? He says, "three month vacation," but, "four months rent free." The house plans seem like a bad idea, because you would have to trade them for something else, you couldn't use them to build the house.

dont take the house plan. that's a lame offer. You can get them free and no builder will trade a house plan for the building of it. what would they have to gain from the houseplan you give them to build for you? It just doesnt' make sense. The LA place (car usage alone) is your best bet money wise. Hope you get an awesome offer from your articles/news appearances.

Make sure you know what people will trade for the trade you want to do. In other words, plan ahead. It doesn't matter what this is, a lap dance, a house, whatever. The important thing is what people will be willing to trade for it. If somebody emails you to say, for instance, that they'd be interested in the house plans, and will give you something substantial for them...trade for those.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Anonymous9:15 PM

Everyone's all, "dude, Hollywood, holy expletive," but it kinda has a time limit. What if it's the next item, and then nobody offers for it, and the date passes? It'd be great, if, like it says up top, someone offered for it beforehand, but otherwise, it's too big a risk.

  72. I think it is going to come down to the Hollywood deal or the House plans. Monatarily Hollywood Makes sence, but marketibility the Home Plans make sence. You have to remember since he is not actually going to use any of this stuff he has to think about what would be easier to trade for something better.

Although the monatary value he is at already is somewhere in the 20-30 thousand doller range. The house plans may take him a step backward or two.

This is such a wonderful idea!! I love it. This is definatly one of those ideas that you have to file in the "Hey! I shoulda thought of it!!"

The LA offer is the most tempting so far but I don't think it's worth a year rent-free. Something better will come along.

LR said the dancer was over-estimating her value. Well a lapdance at a typical club in Montreal was $10/song last time I checked. figure that Rachel, not being a local, would be considered exotic and thus command a higher price. Also factor in that a club that brings in talent from other countries is probably more upscale than average, which would also bring her price up, and her estimate is probably pretty accurate.

I'm not saying it's worth the trade, but for the folks who like to put a cash value on everything it shouldn't be undervalued either.

And so I've spent a couple hours reading about your adventures, Kyle. All I can say, is dayum wish I'd thought of it! I'm a single momma to six kids running a web development business.. I need a house too whimpers. If you get an "extra" house would you trade it for the following?

Our undying gratitude (might even involved some kissing of feet.. maybe)
Some lovingly used toys and books (we have the entire Harry Potter series)
A wooden letter opener with an elephant sculpted into it.. given to me after a clients recent trip to India (sorry client.. it is a house after all).
A Viewsonic Pocket PC with approx 100 mp3's of 80's music and two ebooks
My first born (he's 21 yo now.. strong boy.. maybe he can help out around the house?)
My second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth born (all girls.. though they might object mildly) - just think you could start your own girls punk rock band.. only you already traded the recording contract.. darnit.

Seriously, Kyle, brilliant idea and we all wish you the best of luck! Now I have to get back to work!!

Phoenix is an awesome, hapening city. Nothing yet posted is a good trade. Hollywood & the Porsche comes closest, but there are too many questions and the startup time is too immediate to make it a viable, actual 4 month deal. Wait for something better. I'm certain it is coming.

I was inspired by the whole trading thing, and started an experiment that is much the same thing, but starting with a penny. It is much smaller scale and the end goal is only extra credit in economics. (we have been talking about how a barter economy evolved into a money system.) As far as which you should take, take something that you can keep going with. Don't settle for anything less than your goal. I say don't take the stripper because if you do then you will lose the support of everyone who thinks that is immoral and wrong.

Here's my recommendation. Trade for the summerhouse in Hollywood and put it up on ebay. You obviously can get good radio/tv publicity to jack up the price. You can probably even get on Leno or some other show with the perfect audience for you. Use the proceeds to buy the General Lee and whatever else would have good trade value. Good Luck.

  105. Anonymous12:56 PM

Consider this, for how long can you hold the Phoenix deal? So far the deal in LA is the best, but also comes with the time frame thing that makes it... less "tradable". I mean you can keep the house empty for too long or the year free rent will be changing to months free rent. The same will go to the LA department. with those you're forced to enjoy them and not hold for the next trade. Trade them for something you can hold over time, even if is of less value in money, because that way you can hold until you get to your home.

Any way, Good luck, From Venezuela...

I would definitely avoid the house plans. As expensive as they may be, its nowhere near a year's rent anywhere, unless the house planned is some million-dollar mansion. And if someone was wanting a huge mansion, they probably aren't going to nit-pick about getting a free house plan at the cost of giving away something "better". That seems like a dead-end to me, or at best a big step backwards.

Obviously you're not going to take the LA place, because your not going to find someone to take it from you for something decidedly better within the time-frame.

I dunno if you'll get your house out of this, but I think you could definitely get some physical land if you get lucky, then just start a new one. Trade up a green paperclip for a house worth of wood, a yellow one for a house worth of concrete, a purple one for one house worth of labour (which I might be able to get for you if an offer is right), and so on. Heck, I'm sure you could get those volunteer groups that build lost-cost housing if you could get someone to trade for a decently sized donation to the cause :P.

Good luck, we're all rooting for you.

hollywood is the best deal. house plans is getting closer to your goal, but it isn't a house. just the plans for one. you'd still have to pay someone to build it for you. a summer in hollywood with a porsche would definitely bring in some amazing offers. it isn't as long a stay as arizona, but the living experience in la trumps arizona easily.

OK! I'm a principal of an architectural firm and licensed in 6 states and let me tell you about the offer of the house plans. A lot of "drafters" tend to think they are architects and it would be a pretty bad move to even trust that offer... just because you work for a firm does not make you an architect. You really need to look at his/her portfolio... And also just because you're a licensed architect does not mean you know what the hell you're doing... EVEN IF you had a licensed architect design you a house...you still need Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering...

So that person needs to feed his/her B.S. elsewhere.

this project is the bee's knees! nice going. somebody mathematical should graph your trades, as there's some nifty exponential or squaring of value going on at certain points. This condo, which is 1 of 4 units at Dahomey Condominiums is in the pre-construction phase. Although the offer in LA seems really cool, I wouldn't take it. The house plan thing is a joke too. I mean, you're trying to get the house and they know that you'd have to trade up from the plans to get to the house so they wouldn't be yours anyway. Someone needs to offer a legitimate item. Maybe a REAL car or truck and not some wholesale piece like the stupid blazer.
As for all of the comments, you need to keep in mind that we all wish we were in your shoes and weren't ever able to come up with this idea. Your creative and business traits are probably off the charts. You should look at taking this thing to another - side level. Maybe something like a book about your experience, a side website about cool ideas like this one, or like EBAY, etc.

I could even see a TV show about this similar to the inventor show. It's amazing how some people don't think through their ideas. Your format and execution is flawless!

Have a great time getting your house. You deserve it.

Someone should give you a Masters in Business.

  145. Anonymous10:48 AM

By far, the best offer is the 3 months in Hollywood with the use of the porche. However, this only makes sense if you have a reasonable trade offer lined up. After all, you don't want to use the offer, you want to trade it for something more valuable. The dates of the offer are probably not negotiable, (the owner will take their vacation on their own schedule and not wait for you to find a trader to use the time.)

The plans for a house might have real value, if the designer is willing to work with someone besides you (whoever you trade it the plans to.)

Right now both seem like you need to have a trade lined up for, or you could end up with a item that ends your trade-up plans.

The hollywood guy leaves tomorrow so that isn't going to work for a trade now. People are being too hard on the dancer. she says 288 sessions = 24hrs. I'm sure you could ask for 288 different sessions because most people can't stay awake and fully function for 24 straight hours not to mention she'd need a bathroom break. The house plans seem cool but what if they end up sucking and then no one wants them and the "stamp" issue seems fishy. Maybe some retired people will have a houseboat that they'll trade for a year in Phoenix. Good Luck and I hope all the publicity doesn't kill your dreams.

Jay needs to get a better way to spend his money because that ride is junk. The stripper has got to go b/c of your own relationship, besides 24 hrs of no touching...get real! The commercial is out so that's that. I'm not even going to comment on the old timer whatever that thing is. Your best bet is the Hollywood deal. Not because of all of the riches that come along with it, but this is a profitable means towards your house. This is Hollywood. This is where people try to make their dreams come true. This will give you the most lucrative offer for your next adventure.

Brenda's Chicago condo offer is a good one and should be up in the offers section. Find out exactly where her property is located and get an independent appraisal free from a real estate agent or internet listings.

Brenda - if there are 4 units, could one be offered to the builder in exchange for finishing your 2 and Kyle's one?

It's a slightly complex deal, but a condo in a hot urban market could easily be traded for a rural house or one in the burbs.

Not having a stamp on the plans means that the plans can't technically be built. So, in order for the plans to be of any use, someone would need to pass the plans through the city/state where the house was going to be built and then these plans would need to get approved (and stamped) all of this costs money . . . so it is something to keep in mind when consdiering the house plans. I know that the uncertified architect is much cheaper then an architect that can stamp plans . . . also something to consider when looking to "trade up"

The house plan might have been viable if it had a stamp of approval (or whatever makes it acceptable) and the lap-a-thon is getting into the wrong kind of bartering. I'd say hold on to it for now. I think you'll definitely find something better.

    Hi Kyle,

Way to go! You certainly have traded up the food chain a long way. What I do not understand is how you have kept yourself in some form of a home (and food and clothes, and ...) while you have worked toward your ultimate one. Are you a trust fund kid?

My addition to your quest is this: Start working backwards from the ultimate goal, the house. You could ask psople with houses to post what they would trade them for (actually you are starting to get posts like this already in that Chicago condo deal). Ideally you could build an "online map" (gant chart?) of the path from 1-year lease to the ultimate plan.

Myself, I have a hard time imagining the last few trades that will lead to a satisfactory home for you. And I would like to see more about what that home would be (location, size, condition, ...) Unless you simply plan to trade it away as well, the home will need to be somewhere you work, where you can afford the taxes and upkeep, etc. Most people with a substantial home are going to need a real big trade for it, unless it is more of a charitable donation. For instance, I have a home for sale right now. To trade it away, I would need to pay off the mortgage ($200K+) and get something in addition I valued more highly than the equity ($75K+). Would you be willing to build the home (if you ended up trading for the materials and land at some point)? Maybe there is a way for some people to pool resources that help you. For instance I have expertise, tools, some materials, etc. but have not seen anything yet that I would want to trade for. Maybe there is another way that people like me can enter your "market". Could the single thread of your trades somehow branch off into multiple threads that will avoid the need to eat the entire house in one bite so to speak. I hope there is something in here that is helpful. Jeff McCabe, Ann Arbor.

SPLIT YOUR TRADE. Like a stock. Theoretically this would:
    1. Multiply your chance of success.
    2. Allow you to diversify your total risk (for example you could have a novel higher-risk and also a more conservative trade lineage)
    3. Allow a small group of people to pool their resources for a multi-item or shared trade. Thus opening up a larger trading pool.
    4. You may ultimately "piece" together your dream house (land, materials, contractor, etc..)
    5. Smaller trades could help sustain/provide resources for the big trades.
It would also be "fair" since all would have come from the paper clip! I hope you consider it - good luck!

The dude who said to split it may be on to something. You could do 6 months rent in Phoenix or maybe even two weeks or a month at a time - like a time share. You could even get more for the winter months.

I think what you are doing is unbelievable. Good luck man.

since you are in the realms of big city lights in AZ and there are a few casinos down that neck of the woods --- wouldnt it be interesting if one of them came to the party with 12 months worth of free shows in their cabaret rooms for two people

that way you can uptrade that to another phycial asset item such as a boat more easily

Genius! I saw your story which was recently featured on out local evenibng news! Best of luck....And hey! Hold out for bigger and better offers - you can do waaaaaay better than a almost-but-not-quite-pimped-out ride or the overpriced stripper chick. The LA offer indeed is eye grabbing and tempting but c'm on A YEAR (yes it's in Phoenix - but nonetheless its for a YEAR!) vs 3 months. Is that really a thought provoking dilemma?

Isn't the Hollywood deal due ? This guy must be in England by now.Without much thought, it seemed like the best deal. Now you're left with not much. Wait for new proposals but don't let people forget about you, seek for as much radio an tv interviews as you can. I think this is a crucial moment in your plan, like the one when you traded the instant party for the snowmobile. I think if you pull this one off, you'll be on your way to getting a house. Good Luck!!!

Another word about SPLIT YOUR TRADE: I was rather general in my previous post because there are so many possibilities. Some specifics:
    A. As someone mentioned, you could split the current trade by trading "time shares" of it. Sometimes an asset has greater intrinsic value just by partitioning it.
    B. Or you could ask to trade for two items (or more) of combined equal or bigger or better value.
    C. I also meant to imply the possibility of running several trade "threads" simultaneously, as another commenter mentioned.
    D. Sometimes grouping items creates greater value. So in the future you could regroup several items into a single trade package.

Who in their right mind would want a stripper/whore? Said no touching from the "client" sp that means she can do all the touching she wants. And who is going to pay for her go get to whomever buys her & her return trip? And how do you know she is really a she? Need I say more?
