Cheers, Mike Butler Charlotteotown, PE ********** Hello, I'm interested in trading my car, along with the crazy cross continent story and some pictures that go with it. The initial journey started in Edmonton, AB and ended in Torreon, Mexico with many misadventures in between (thanks to the car). The trip wasn't so much about the places we saw but the people we met and friendship that strengthened through the hardship. Everyone we have told the story to has loved our animated account of the events. However, when we attempted to transcribe the trip to paper, it lost some of the flare and excitement. We believe putting the story in the "write" hands would be a great contribution to your quest for a home (and the story that goes along with it). Much like you, we believe that life is about the journey and not just the destination. Please contact either of us if you are interested in reading a more detailed account... oh and getting a car with its relatively new engine. I thought it would be fun to make you an offer... I have an old 1978 Dodge Sportsman Van... I bought it in 2001 and lived in it for a bit. I built a futon frame for the back and some shelves. It's a good van, because the people before me had it and used it in the summers to haul a trailer. Then, they were old and had it in storage for 13 years. I got it in 2001 for $1000... and have driven and camped and lived in it ever since... but it is getting beyond me to be able to care for it. All the seals are going because it is so old. All the metal pieces are good because it has had so little use, but the seals leak! Right now it needs a starter solenoid and a new carberator because there is a vacuume leak in the throttle arm. I have all the service and mechanical records since 2001. It's not running right now. What my van needs is someone who is good with a wrench and wants a good van for travelling, or camping, or climbing trips... something like that. I don't have the tools or a garage where I can work on it myself. Not to mention that I'm a girl... and while I've done some things like change the front wheel bearings... It stresses me and I usually sit down for 3 cups of coffee before I get into the grease. Lotsa new parts on it... new hoses new thermostat timing chain & gears waterpump belts front coil springs new cap and rotor valve cover gaskets new set of sparkplugs (still in packages) good tires shocks are 1 year old new exhaust on it not much rust on it.... but it's not running right now. I think it's the starter solenoid or the wiring in the steering column. Could you find someone to love my van? Some one that would love to have her? I could trade you for the snowmobile or something else. I live in Canmore and I do LOTS of backcountry skiing and stuff here! A snowmobile would be wonderful! I work at the Canmore Nordic Center and have lots of people to ask about snowmobiles and things... we use them for work every day... I can send you pictures if you would like to see Daisy (the van)... She's blue and grey on the outside and blue interior. Let me know! It would be fun to meet you too! I don't know what to do about the fact that she's not running right now. Could you move it? fix it? I love that you're bartering and not doing this the old fashioned way of getting into debt way over your head. That is so admirable. I might, and I stress might, have an item to trade you for the snowmobile. It's a drift boat. My husband built it himself and has been contemplating selling it on ebay. We have property in northern Michigan that we could use this snowmobile on. Really. Now, I have to clear this with said husband, but if you would be interested, throw this on the pile of other offers and let me know if it shakes out. Otherwise, look for it on ebay. =) P.S. I will trade you not one, but 2 life-size Playmobil figures.

One is a Soldier, the other is a Pirate.

You can see them here: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/andrew.dunlop/Playmobil

Take the car behind door number one!

Anonymous said...

Take the car. It's one step away from a nicer car, which will be one step away from an RV, which will THEN be one step away from a house.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, prend l'auto!!!

C'est vrai que ta maison est de plus en plus près avec ça ;)

Anonymous said...

Dude, you got to take the playmobil, might not be worth as much as a car, but they got the cool factor. You may be able to exchange them with some kid in Japan or a lego house...
Don't take the easy route.

Unknown said...

You know, there was some guy selling an X-wing on ebay a while back. that'd be fun and valuable to swap something for.

But currently, you've got to go with the playmobil. It's just too kitsch not to.

Matt Lodder said...

You really have got to take those Playmobil figures! One of them's a pirate, FFS.

Don't take the car!

Hi Kyle,

Take the blue car.

The car! Take the car!

Its a dealership putting their name out for publicity. It can't be TOO bogus. Besides, even if its scrap, its worth more than the life-sized toys!

Kyle,
Have you ever heard "Snowmobile Song" by Stompin' Tom Connors? I is the best song in the whole world. You should just sit outside on your new ride listening to it in the snow.

The car would be cool, but I see it as a dead end (where can you go from a car? another car?). I see a lot of potential in the playmobil figures. I'd got for those ;)

Anonymous said...

dont take the car, the skidoo you have worth more then a neon 95!!

Anonymous said...

just keep the skidoo, much more fun then having a house :D

Anonymous said...

bear skin rug. You can trade it straight up for a house for sure!

Anonymous said...

Trade for the figures.
They're more unique and harder to find (anyone can get a 95 neon).

Anonymous said...

go with the bear rug its not a common item .. you could trade it with anybody from another country ... the playmobile will attract attention but not as much as the bear rug !!!!

who would not love to have a rug in front of his fire place .....

Anonymous said...

The car is probably the best thing to take in terms of practicality, but the Playmobil figures would be so much cooler!

Anonymous said...

what the hell do you guys want him to fail? he needs to take the car if he wants this to go anywhere, not the damn playmobil

Anonymous said...

Wow! I better not let him know I offered his boat.... I sent him an email about doing this, then I sent one to you, before hearing back from him. No wonder the divorce rate is 50%.... wives doing silly shiat like that! ha ha!!

Anyway, after seeing the other offers, I say go for the playmobil figures. They are a story waiting to happen. And besides, they could hold your beer for you.

Anonymous said...

Take the awsome giant playmobile people!!! dude.. One's a pirate! a fricking pirate!!

I take some offense at any and all references to a '95 Dodge Neon not being a fun choice. My formative years were spent in a '95 Dodge Neon. My '95 Dodge Neon happened to be emerald green, not black. My '95 Dodge Neon also happened to have 4 doors, not 2. But my '95 Dodge Neon certainly was a fun-tastic five-speed with as much funtential as 2 giant playmobile people.

Some fun things about '95 Dodge Neons you might not know, but may influence your decision:
1) They come with a video. (At least mine did, and if I still have it, I'd be happy to send you my copy). On the cover, the Neon says, "hi."
2) An apparently normal quirk of the car is that the breaks squeek like crazy if you leave the car sitting out all day or if it's been raining. The squeeking breaks cause no safety concerns, but they do a great job of scaring your fellow passengers and passers-by on the road.
3) Just how many people can you cram into a '95 Dodge Neon? In my experience, the answer is at least 7. Can you make it 8? You'll never know unless you try.
4) How many times can you or someone else knock off the driver's side rearview mirror and put it back on within a 3 month period? In my experience, at least 3. But you'll never know if it can be 4 unless you give it a whirl.
5) Last, but not least... the most important fun and exciting fact about a '95 Dodge Neon: Did you know that the car keys actually glow in the dark? No joke. My key was bright yellow and glowed in the dark. I found this so exciting that I still have my key even though I don't have the car.

Good luck in this tough decision, Kyle. Sorry I can't offer any input on the funtential of a 1990 Chevy Lumina Van.

I don't know..... A arcade machine!! That would be cool also!!! What would be even cooler is to try to get the arcade machine AND the playmobil guys, and have them PLAY IT!

Seriously - I vote for the arcade machine!

Scooby said...

Take the arcade game!!!!! Have FUN with what you are doing and start small!!! Forget the car!

Anonymous said...

Ill give you webspace on my domain at http://www.xoshare.com to post pictures of your trades

bonne chance !!!

Take the Playmobil. Cool stuff...

Anonymous said...

I would give you 2, count 'em _2_ dollars american.

How much is a snowmobil worth?

Anonymous said...

Okay, so WHEN will you decide on what you're gonna trade for the skidoo?

P.S. The drift boat is out of the running (collective 'ohhhhhh'):

If you dont take the playmobil it will make me cry. so go ahead and take the car make me cry, It will be on your head. Then I'll trade you 'one jar of tears' for the car.

Anonymous said...

Ohhhhh - you gotta take the Playmobil. They are sooooo cool!!!

Anonymous said...

Ohhhhh - you gotta take the Playmobil. They are sooooo cool!!!

Anonymous said...

Clearly you must pick the Playmobil figures. The cars are swell and all but really, a car just doesn't have the cool factor that the Playmobil figures have. Playmobil figures aren't practical, but dammit, they're entertaining! Plus, you'd be amazed at how much you could get for that kind of kitsch.....

Kyle MacDonald said...

hmmmmm, lot of "ANONYMOUS" advice coming in for the Playmobil.....
sure seems like quite a few ANONYMOUS people have something to say about how much I should take them....

As a Packers fan, that Bart Starr life-sized statue is pretty sweet. Though the 12 screen video wall and one of the cars also sound pretty good.
This site is sweet! Good luck with everything.

wow videowall big and clunky but still a big a** tv set you could watch all 3 charlies angels and still see bosley too (if he was in the picture)

Hi Kyle,

I just read the article in the National Post,....and I think this idea is absoutely Nuts and Wonderful at the same time!!!!!! The concept behind it really is so Great, and I have no doubt that you will be able to achieve your goal...eventually!

If you need someone to accompany you on one of those hockey games/concerts,..give me a shout!

And just in case you're in the area of Ottawa...I'd LOVE to sit and chat with you about this crazy crusade of yours!

Cheers,

Don't take any car! Car depreciates in value faster than your Skidoo. With a Skidoo you've confined yourself to a smaller area (anywhere that snows), but the Playmobil figures would take you out of that hole!

P.S. what if someone offers you a house at a remote place, right now? Would you take it? Does a cottage count as a house?

Drew said...

I think your best bet is the motor cycle. It may seem like somewhat of a sideways trade rather than up, but a motorcycle could be used in many more places than a snow mobile and should turn out to be an easy trade.

Anonymous said...

One brown turd: I would like to offer the shit I just took in the toilet to whoever wants it, but for a trade. Eventualy I want to get a big screen T.V. So whoever wants to trade me something for my crap, literaly, let me know.

Anonymous said...

Kyle: I sure your mother gave you some kind of advice like this - consider all of your choices carefully.

Anonymous said...

Hurry up and decide. I can't take this waiting! Oh, BTW the PIRATE is really cool but I'm not sure it's the right decision...
Maybe ask some of those yaho-ho-ho puzzle pirate gamers what they would trade for the pirate.

Anonymous said...

Kyle -- Will trade one 1992 Mercury Sable -- recently blown headgasket, but eveything else works! Sweet ride, if you know a mechanic. Also, can you please put me in touch with the lady who wants to trade the silver dollars? I need that silver dollar.

Anonymous said...

I will trade you one red paperclip.

Anonymous said...

Go for the Playmobil! Much cooler than a car.

Anonymous said...

It would almost make more sence to keep the sled and start with a new red paperclip :-)

Or go with the motorhome, it is a house for half the year.

Anonymous said...

I'd go for the car, the pictures and the story to Mexico. It's not only the car your trading for, it was the experience that someone had with that car. I think an experience is way more valuable than anything in the world.

Anonymous said...

the car with the mexico story. i was going to say the motor-home but the car would be cool too.

Anonymous said...

take the red paper clip, complete the circle and start over :)

Anonymous said...

DUDE! I'd say the motorhome is most in the direction of a house :), heck you could make it with only 1 more trade after that!!

Anonymous said...

DUDE -- you should take the '78 Dodge Sportman for ONE SIMPLE REASON -- look who owns it -- "Natalie". (hello?) And, she "wants to meet you." Hello? Tell her to post picture of the girl, not the van -- Haha (but not kidding) Seriously, take the Kootenay Rocky Mountain vacation for two and just Bring Natalie. I bet she's a nice girl! But then you'd be out of trade bate, huh? Well I will donate a real rubber band ball if you give a full report on the vacation with Nat.

Anonymous said...

KYLE -- NO, WAIT -- did you notice a "Bridget" who wants to trade in her studen loan? Trade the Mobile for the loan! Date the girl. dude, These kind of opportunties only present themselves a certain number of times in one's lifetime. If you won't, please tell Bridget I will trade the handmade Rubber Band Ball for the student loan and one nice date, tbd. Also, please ask the guy with the '77 Chevelle V8 to contact me, I need that car!! $500, firm. -your pal, Tom

Anonymous said...

you NEED to go for the MEXICO STORY AND THE CAR!! I think that sounds like it was a good time, and I want to hear about it!

Anonymous said...

Ya! I agree... you should go for the MEXICO STORY and the CAR! I think the journey's you take are way more important in life then what you own.

Anonymous said...

Wow, When I offered up the videowall I thought I was totally over the top on offers. Before I blew my back up, I charged $2000 a day rent for it.
I would really hate to see anyone watching Charlies Angels on it, although I suppose that better than showing pictures of tennis shoes(la gear) where it spent most of it's life, well that and golf tournaments in the sponsors tents out on the fairways.
I never understood watching golf on tv really,
But in any case the videowall is up for grabs although depending on your line of thinking the motorhome might give it a good run for the money...

Well Kyle you've certainly gone and made a mess this time... you now have only one item to trade and several items that would be worth trading for. What a predicament. I am however willing to compound your problem by offering you yet another choice. How does 50 marijuana seeds sound, sounds like a heck of a lot more possibilities down the road if your willing to make a four month commitment. Just think 50 seeds should lead to at least 25 female plants which could each grow to produce a pound of fine herb each. 25 pounds of top notch pot could easily be converted into $50,000 worth of tradable merchandise which would put you well on the way to a house. I'll even throw in two books on cultivation. Heck I'm making this too easy, knowing your trading skills february will come and go and you'll be on house number three. Let me know and please don't NARC me out after all I saw that cupboard full of solvents... I know what you're capable of.
Yours in barter

Go for the iron table.
everyone's got a used car.
you'll turn that table to gold!

btw - try and get on american radio. I love the CBC but the bigger the audience the better!

Anonymous said...

The motor home is getting close to a real house, but I would check the condition. The all wheel drive low rider looks nice. I would go for a vehicle in good conditon. If are ever in Lake George, NY stop in for a beer. Rick

Anonymous said...

The 1990 Aerostar van seems like a good trade, if Danielle has good service records ,history etc..Rick...LG, NY

Anonymous said...

TAKE THE PONG MACHINE SON. If not, take something unique so that others will want to trade something for it in the future. Everyone has a used car kickin around, I'm sure they wouldnt want to trade you for one. But it looks like you've done a good job at picking out unique abjects, keep up the good work.

wow, what a Cool idea
kudos for thinking it up
i think you should go for the 88 pickup toyota lowrider, it's PIMP
